Soccer Table Update as of 5/17

MLS:
 - Past week's results - On Thursday night Real Salt Lake hosted the Houston Dynamo and reminded everyone why they were the 2009 MLS Champions with a 3-1 victory. Saturday was a day of draws with Philly/Dallas going 1-1, New England/San Jose end level 0-0, Kansas City / Chicago battled to a 2-2 result in the pouring rain, and the surprising result of the weekend was Toronto going on the road to earn a point against the league leading Galaxy. The rest of the league ended with 1-0 results as Columbus topped Chivas USA, Colorado beat DC United, and Seattle got revenge over New York.
 - Current MLS Table:

  • East: Columbus (14) got off to a slow start because of their schedule, but are close to taking over the Eastern conference leaders New York (15). Philly and DC continue to drift away from the back at 4 and 3 points respectively.
  • West: Despite the draw, LA is still dominating the West at 23 points and are undefeated after 9 matches. After the Galaxy the West is a complete jumble with 2nd from 8th only separated by 3 points.  The most improved team of the year so far is San Jose sitting tied for 2nd at 13 points with Salt Lake, Houston, & Colorado with a game in hand.

Serie A:
 - Past week's results - The last week of the season came down to a two-club race in which either team could take the title, just like in England. Roma put the pressure on the 08/09 champions with a 2-0 victory against Chievo which forced Inter to at least draw. Inter went on the road to Siena and made their fans nervous by not netting the winner until the second half. On Saturday AC Milan & Juventus matched up in Milan in what many would have thought would have been a monumental draw to end the season. But with both sides secured in their place it was just for bragging rights, which went to Milan behind two Ronaldinho goals. Sampdoria and Napoli ended their strong seasons with victories, while Fiorentina capped off their disappointing campaign with a loss - ending 13-8-17.
 - Final Serie A Table - AC Milan, Sampdoria and Roma all led attempts to take the title, but in the end Inter Milan (82) claimed their 5th straight Serie A title, finsihing 24-10-4. Italy's three remaining UEFA Champions League positions went to Roma (80), AC Milan (70), and Sampdoria (67). One of the biggest story lines of this season will be that Juventus (55) fell out of European competition altogether following their loss to AC Milan. Europa League spots were won by Palermo (65) and Napoli (59). Atalanta, Siena, and Livorno were the three relegated clubs for the 09/10 season, taking their place following Serie B promotion is Lecce, Brescia, and Cesena.

FA Cup:
 - The world oldest soccer knockout competition completed its 129th edition in which the Chelsea Blues completed the double (along with the EPL) over the relegation bound Portsmouth. The final was highly entertaining with Chelsea hitting the post 5 times in the first half and both teams missing PKs. 762 clubs started the 09/10 FA Cup and after 14 rounds Chelsea won their 6th cup.
