Final 2010 World Cup Roster Announced for the US

Following a disappointing loss to the Czech Republic (even though the stars didn't play for the US), the World Cup fever kicked in another gear today as national team head coach Bob Bradley announced the final 23-man squad for South Africa. Here is a look at the players by position:

  • Goalkeepers: Tim Howard, Brad Guzan and Marcus Hahnemann - No surprises or omissions here as everyone has had these three pegged at the goalies for the US for some time now. Troy Perkins got a few starts in 2009, but nothing to contend with the three EPL keepers. (2 returners from the 2006 squad)
  • Defenders: Bocanegra, Bornstein, Cherundolo, DeMerit, Goodson, Onyewu, and Spector - Marshall and Pearce are the two defenders cut from the 30-man roster and I don't really have any complaints with this group. The two cuts do however help the MLS return a few known names to the league while the World Cup is going on. The biggest concerns with this group is around injuries - Onyewu and Bocanegra in particular - the US needs both of these guys at their peak fitness and confidence for a strong run in the World Cup. (3 returners from the 2006 squad)
  • Midfielders: Beasley, Bradley, Clark, Dempsey, Donovan, Edu, Feilhaber, Holden and Torres - The cuts from this group included Rogers, Kljestan, and Bedoya, no big problems here as all three of these players stayed on the fringes during the past few years, even with the Gold Cup last summer. Donovan, Dempsey and Bradley are locks at starting and the key for how the US will perform. It will be interesting to see who the coach chooses for the 4th midfield starter. The remaining 6 midfielders have all shown promise at various times over the past year, with their club or the national team. If forced to pick the four starter I'd go with Feilhaber or Clark. (3 returners from the 2006 squad)
  • Forwards: Altidore, Buddle, Gomez, and Findley - A completely new set of strikers from the 2006 World Cup so the lack of experience is the biggest hurdle with this group. Everyone thought Ching was a lock on the team and Findley making the cut came to a huge surprise, especially since he didn't even get in the game last night. I think the key factor in Findley's inclusion was the need for speed after Charlie Davies was unable to recover in time. (0 returners from the 2006 squad)
So there you have the final 23 players representing the US in the 2010 World Cup (unless there is an injury). Thoughts on the squad? Players that were left out?
