Soccer Table Update as of 5/10

MLS:
 - Past week's results -Four mid-week match-ups saw DC United earn their first win of the season, 2-1 over Kansas City, and the Galaxy earned a critical top of the table victory against Columbus 1-0. However, Columbus got back on the winning track earning a 3-2 victory over an injury plagued New England. LA were on the road for the second time in four days and completely dominated the Seattle Sounders 4-0 behind Landon Donovan's three assists and one goal. New York went down a man early and returned to their 2009 form giving up four goals to San Jose. Finally, Toronto put on their best performance of the year winning 4-1 against Chicago, if only they got play this way on the road.
 - Current MLS Table:

  • East: This year the East have cleared become the weaker conference with an average goal difference of negative 2.75 goals. New York stays atop with 15 points, but Columbus sits only 4 points back and two games in hand. The bottom of the table looks like a battle for last place in the league at this point. But luckily for New England (7), Philadelphia (3) and DC United (3) the MLS does not have a relegation system in place yet.
  • West: The Galaxy are by far and away the best MLS team this year at 22 points in eight games. However, how this team responds to losing Donovan (and possibly Buddle) to the World Cup in the summer will be crucial. The rest of the West is only four points apart from 2nd place Houston (13) to surprisingly last place Seattle (9). No one would have predicted that San Jose would have 3 more points this far into the season than Seattle and having played two less games. (Note: The West's goal difference average - +3.25)

EPL:
 - Past week's results - The mid-week Champions League position clash saw Tottenham secure 4th place in the EPL with a 1-0 victory over ManCity behind a Peter Crouch header. On Sunday Arsenal finally looked like the club everyone expected to see all season long, with Van Persie and Arshavin back in the line-up in a 4-0 result against Fulham. Manchester United topped Stoke City 4-0 to keep the pressure on Chelsea, but that didn't matter as the Blues routed Wigan 8-0 with a one man advantage. Burnley finished their EPL season with a strong win over Tottenham 4-2, but will still call the Championship home next year.
 - Final EPL Table - Another English season in the books at the title returns to London as Chelsea take their fourth title ever and first since the 05/06 season. Manchester United and Arsenal finished first and second securing spots in the UEFA Champions League group stage next year. Tottenham's fourth place earns the club their first CL position, finally breaking the 'top four' of the EPL. Europa League action for next year falls to Manchester City, Aston Villa and Liverpool for finishing 5th through 7th. And at the bottom of the table as already noted Burnley, Hull City and Portsmouth will be making the descent to the Championship next year with aspirations of a quick bounce back up to the EPL.

Serie A:
 - Past week's results - Roma saved their season, and the Serie A title race, with two late goals by Totti to put them ahead of Cagliari 2-1. Inter Milan held on to the full three points in a surprisingly tough battle against Chievo which saw two own goals (one on each side) and two second half goals by Chievo to cut the lead to 4-3. Juventus dropped a highly crucial European position battle against Palermo 3-2 after taking the early 1-0 lead. AC Milan lost 1-0 to Genoa and are ready for next year to begin, as well as their new head coach search.
 - Current Serie A Table - The Serie A title race will come down to the final week as only two points separate Inter Milan (79) and AS Roma (77). Both teams are on the road against teams from the bottom half of the table. AC Milan has all but secured 3rd with a three point and 11 goal advantage over Sampdoria. However, Palermo still have a chance to reach Champions League action with a win next weekend and a draw or loss by Sampdoria. The relegation zone will be unaffected by the final weekend as the bottom three teams have already sealed their fate to Serie B next year.
