News & Rumors Update 11/8

Here are a few of the big stories and rumors going across the wires this weekend:

  • The Court of Arbitration for Sport has suspended the transfer ban it placed on Chelsea a few weeks ago. Chelsea will be free to purchase and sell players in the January transfer window until the CAS finalizes their decision.....
  • .....And if you give a big club the chance to spend the rumors will begin. Soon after the news of the CAS ban being lifted reports came out that the Blues were interested in Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Aguero. Aguero is one of the brightest young strikers in the world, but with a quoted asking price of 40  million pounds, any move happening during this season looks very unlikely. With Chelsea's current depth and striking duo of Drogba and Anelka in form, they will not be forced overspend for the young 21 year old attacker.
  • David Beckham has confirmed that if the LA Galaxy win tonight vs. Chivas, he will stay in LA for the semi-final match-up next weekend, instead of traveling to Qatar for the international friendly between England and Brazil. While this is good news for the Galaxy fans, I wonder was there really a chance Beckham would leave the Galaxy during his first time in the playoffs for a friendly?
  • Chivas USA goalkeeper Zach Thornton won the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award. He led the league in shutouts and goals allowed.
  • Tottenham are trying to convince investors that they will get more return by purchasing the naming rights to their future stadium instead of Chelsea's Stamford Bridge. Chelsea recently announced their would sell the rights to the stadium name, but keep 'Stamford Bridge' in the title. Tottenham are building a new 56,000 capacity stadium which is scheduled to open for the 2012-23 season.
  • International Sports Media company MP & Silva purchases the TV rights for the 2010-11 & 2011-12 Serie A seasons. MP & Silva currently have deals with ESPN and the BBC. No word yet on how this could impact Fox Soccer Channel's coverage of Serie A.
  • U-20 international mid-fielder Dilly Duku recently elected to leave college at Rutgers University to 'explore professional options'. Rumors indicates that he has already signed a 4-year deal with the MLS and enter the draft for next season.
  • Soccer not as big in the United States? Don't tell that to David Beckham's bank account. After moving from Real Madrid to the LA Galaxy in 2007 Beckham has seen a rise in endorsement contracts. Reports now indicate that the England international earned $16.5 million during his full season with the Galaxy (2008). He can expect his global appeal to stay at high levels over the next year with another loan to AC Milan in the cards, as well as appearing for England in the 2010 World Cup next summer.
