World Cup 2010 Analysis - 6/12

The World Cup is finally here and we are four matches into the competition (writing this as the US/England game is in the warm up stages). Here is my quick analysis of groups A & B who have completed the first of their three group games.

Group A:
 - South Africa: On paper the weakest team and in the first 30 minutes of the match they looked overwhelmed by the hosting pressure. However, in the second half they lit up the country with an amazing strike and almost won in the final moments. After this match they should have the confidence to compete against France and Uruguay.
 - Mexico: Despite the draw I think this squad is the most capable to win their two matches from Group A. A stable of bright young stars will find their footing in their first World Cup. I think they should avoid putting Blanco in the match who looks very out of shape and unable to keep up the fast pace Mexico needs to play.
 - France: Great individuals, not the most fluid team. While they did provide the better soccer on Friday they could not break down the Uruguay defense. The French should add Chelsea midfielder Malodu for the next match.
 - Uruguay: I was disappointed to see Uruguay come out in such a defensive stance, basically with 7 on defense. They were not able to effectively use their dual strike force led by Diego Forlan. Will need to take a more aggressive stance against Mexico and the hosts.

Group B:

 - South Korea: I believe they put on the most impressive performance of the tournament so far. The Korean's skill on the ball and conditioning was evident from the start of the match. The match-up reminded everyone that the FIFA rankings don't mean anything once the tournament starts - Greece was 13th with South Korea in the late 40s.
 - Argentina: A video game start for Messi and squad with several shots on goal in the opening minutes which could have seen Nigeria down 2-0 or 3-0 by the 10th minute. However, with all of their opportunities and talent they were unable to finish their chances which could hurt them later on.
 - Nigeria: A slow start by a team that looked awed by being at the World Cup and going up against Argentina. However, they found their footing, made a few good shots, and by the end were holding their own. Should be interesting to see them take on South Korea for possibly the 2nd position in this group.
 - Greece: The ugliest performance out of the 8 countries. The Greeks didn't look to have any flow or striking power until perhaps the final 10 minutes of the match. I don't think Greece will be able to change their style enough to beat Nigeria or Argentina.

Thoughts on the first 4 matches of the 2010 World Cup? Now lets turn back to the action as the US and England kicks off.
